Summer Academy FAQs

Registration Questions

WHERE DO YOU OFFER YOUR CAMPS?

For Summer 2024, we will be offering our camps only at our Burnaby campus location as we are currently re-evaluating our Surrey programs.

how do i register for science al!VE’s summer academy camps?

Our camp registration is handled through a third-party registration platform, Karelo. You can register for Burnaby camps on Friday, March 1, 2024 at Karelo.

i registered my child in summer academy, but have not received a confirmation email, what do i do?

Before reaching out to us, please check your junk or spam mail inbox as sometimes the confirmations end up there. If you have checked your junk or spam, but still have not received an email, please email saadmin@sfu.ca and they will re-send the confirmation to you.

what grade should i register my child for?

Our camps require participants to be registered for the grade they are going into during the upcoming 2024/2025 school year. E.g., If you child is completing grade 2 during the 2023/2024 school year, they should be registering for our grade 3 camp as they will be going into grade 3 in the 2024/2025 school year.

can my child attend an older age camp?

We do not allow and strongly discourage participants from registering for camps above their current education level as our camps are tailored for specific age groups both educationally and socially amongst participants.

my child has an exceptionality, are they able to attend summer academy?

Science AL!VE Summer Academy works in partnership with our families to offer an accommodating and inclusive camp experience. Children that require additional supports will be integrated into our camps provided the required supports can be met without compromising the safety and security of staff, volunteers and campers. Integration of children that require additional supports will be assessed on a case‐by‐case basis by Science AL!VE staff in partnership with the parent(s)/guardian(s). Once your registration is submitted, our team will review the information provided and reach out to discuss the best way to support your child through Summer Academy.

does science al!ve offer bursaries for summer academy?

Yes, we do provide financial aid bursaries! Our bursary application will open on Friday, March 1th, 2024. You’ll be able to access our bursary application portal here.

why do i need to provide my child’s personal health number / care card information?

Science AL!VE will only use this information in the event of a medical emergency and such information allows our staff or first responders to provide the best care.

A Day at Summer Academy

does my child need to bring a lunch?

Yes! We ask that each child bring a water bottle, lunch and snacks as there is a scheduled lunch and snack breaks throughout each day.

does science al!Ve offer early drop off or late pick up?

Yes! Science AL!VE offers before and after-care at our Burnaby campus location for an additional fee. Our before care runs from 7:45am to 9:00am and our after-care runs from 3:30pm to 5:00pm.

does my child spend time outside during summer academy camps?

Yes! Campers have their lunch outside and we aim to integrate a number of activities that occur outside to allow campers to get fresh air. However, we do monitor the weather daily and when average temperatures exceed 30ºC, we aim to keep campers inside to ensure they do not experience heat related illness.

Camp Curriculum

is the camp curriculum the same each week?

We aim to provide 3 to 4 different camp themes per age group at each of our camp sites that may repeat once during between July and August. Each camp theme is different, but a theme may run again therefore, we do not suggest signing up for the same theme more than once.

can you provide a camp schedule for me to look at?

We do not send out our camp curriculum before the beginning of camp, but we do send summaries of what your child has learned at camp via email so that you can keep up with their daily activities.
