Girls and Young Women
Our program inspires girls and young women to fulfill their unique and important role in STEM. These all-girl programs are led by instructors who serve as inspiring role models, mentors and allies breaking down long-standing stereotypes about women in STEM. They encourage girls and young women to explore areas of STEM, like science and technology, where we want more girls and young women to feel empowered.
As part of our efforts to create inclusive, bias-free learning environments that advance gender equity, our Girls and Young Women Programs welcome gender-diverse youth, including but not limited to cis girls, trans girls, non-binary youth, gender non-conforming youth and genderqueer youth, Two-Spirit youth.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences at Simon Fraser University and SFU’s Women in Engineering invite *girls (grades 7–10) to an engaging hands-on program exploring engineering, energy, and artificial intelligence. Participants will build their own human-powered generator using a coil of magnet wire, magnets, and LEDs, then test how moving the magnets through the coil generates electricity and powers the lights. Through the activity, they will explore electromagnetic induction, energy conversion, and how design choices can affect the amount of electricity produced. The program will also include an interactive AI activity focused on how AI makes decisions, creates content, and why it is important to think critically about AI outputs. This is a FREE event with limited space, so sign up today—no prior experience with engineering or coding required!
