Please note: As of this year, to offset vehicle rentals and travel time, a one-way travel fee will apply to all schools outside of Burnaby School District which will range from $20—$40 dependant on their distance from SFU Burnaby Campus. A two-way travel may apply if booking less than 3 workshops per day. We recognize that there may be financial constraints for schools at this time, should you still want to request workshops, please feel free to reach out to our Classroom Workshops Lead at saadmin4@sfu.ca to discuss options.

Teachers are welcome to choose workshops outside of their age group if it suits their current curriculum, but there is no guarantee that the content will be aged up or down.

kindergarten - mix, mould, and move: material properties

Squish it, stretch it, mould it. In Mix, Mould, and Move, students will explore the amazing properties of different materials by using their senses. From slime and oobleck to kinetic sand and playdough, participants will test how materials stretch, flow, and hold their shape. This workshop helps students discover why some materials are better for building, while others are better for squeezing, and why materials behave the way they do.

grade 1 - music makers lab

Get ready to make some noise. In Music Makers Lab, students will design and play their own musical instruments while exploring the science of sound. By shaking, tapping, and plucking different materials, participants will investigate how vibrations create sound and how pitch, volume, and tone can change. This workshop blends creativity and science for a hands-on jam session that students will not forget.

grade 2 - the mixing table: stir it, swirl it, mix it!

What happens when you mix oil and water and add a little fizz? In The Mixing Table, students will become chemists as they experiment with everyday materials. By stirring, swirling, warming, and mixing, they will discover the difference between physical and chemical changes. Watch bubbles pop, colours blend, and reactions unfold as students explore how new substances can form and how some changes cannot be undone.

grade 3 - turning up the heat!

What happens when things get warmer or cooler? In Turning Up the Heat!, students will dive into the exciting world of thermal energy. Through hands-on experiments, they will explore how heat causes liquids to rise, gases to expand, and objects to change. From building a bottle thermometer to watching a hot air balloon inflate, this workshop brings heat to life. Get ready to investigate how energy moves and why temperature changes matter in our everyday world.

grade 4 - from wind to watts

How does wind turn into electricity? In From Wind to Watts, students will explore renewable energy by building and testing their own wind turbines. As blades spin and

lights glow, participants will discover how energy changes form from motion to electricity. This exciting engineering challenge helps students understand real-world energy transfer and how wind power can help fuel our future.

grade 5 - inside out

Take a journey inside the human body. In Inside Out, students will explore how the respiratory and circulatory systems work together to keep us alive. By building a hands-on model, participants will track oxygen’s path from the lungs, through the heart, and out to the rest of the body. This workshop brings biology to life as students discover how air, blood, and the heart work as an amazing team.

grade 6 - chemical reactions in action!

Get ready for reactions you can see, hear, and feel. In Chemical Reactions in Action!, students will explore how chemicals combine, break apart, and speed up using catalysts. From creating squishy water beads to creating (and watching) an Elephant’s Toothpaste explosion, this workshop brings chemistry to life. Participants will learn how different types of reactions work and why they are important in science and everyday life.

grade 7 - blink, and you’ll miss it!

Some reactions happen fast, and some happen very fast. In Blink and You’ll Miss It!, students will investigate chemical reactions using exciting experiments like the iodine clock and observing other demonstrations. Participants will explore elements, compounds, and catalysts while making predictions and timing reactions. This workshop challenges students to think like real scientists as they explore the chemical changes happening in the blink of an eye.
